ANNOUNCEMENT OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE I-II EXEMPTION EXAM
To The Attention of All 1st Year Students Who Were Placed Into Turkish-Medium Departments
In accordance with the article 5, clause (ı), of Higher Education Law, numbered 2547, foreign language courses at higher education institutions are within the scope of compulsory course and this course is programmed and applied at least for two semesters. The common compulsory foreign language at our university in English and comprises English education at the basic level (CEFR A1/A2). Also, these courses are taught through distance education.
Foreign Language Exemption Exam is held for all the 1st year students who get placed into Turkish-medium departments every year on the date specified according to the related academic calendar. All of our 1st year students who match the criteria (including those who failed the optional preparatory program and will continue their 1st year, and our 1st year students who froze their registration) have the right to take the exam.
Our students who take the pass mark (60 – letter grade CC- and above) as specified pursuant to “Undergraduate Education and Teaching Regulation” of our university are exempt from the courses, Foreign Language I (English I) (IMU011), to be taught in the fall semester and, Foreign Language II (English II) (IMU012), to be taught in the spring semester. The students who pass the Exemption Exam have the right, upon their wish, to continue their courses, renouncing their rights of exemption by writing a petition within the frameworks of codes of practice which are to be determined later.
Common Compulsory Foreign Language I and Common Compulsory Foreign Language II Exemption Exams will be held ONLINE on Friday, October 6, 2023. You can find the exam hours for your department in the table below. Those who want to be exempt from the courses IMU011 and IMU012 have to receive a passing grade (60 - CC). Students can only take the exam in the session of their department.
Note: The students who successfully complete the optional preparatory program and will continue their 1st year don’t need to take the Exemption Exam. Foreign Language I (English I) and Foreign Language II (English II) course grades of those students will be entered on the system as AA in accordance with Istanbul Medeniyet University Foreign Language Preparation Education and Exam Guideline (Article 10/7), dated 18 September 2023.
The online exam will be conducted through UBYS. You can find details about the implementation of the exam in the attached "Online Exam (Student) System User Guide" file.
English I (IMU011) Exemption exam consists of 20 questions and the exam duration is 35 minutes. Likewise, our English II (IMU012) Exemption exam consists of 20 questions and the exam duration is 35 minutes. After the end of the English I Exemption exam, there will be a 5-minute break and after the 5-minute break, our English II Exemption exam will start. Those who want to be exempt from both courses must take both exams. You must complete both exams within the time given to you.
You can use your desktop (PC), laptop or cell phone for the English I-II Exemption Exam. You are expected to take necessary precautions against internet connection problems and/or power outages during the exam. For this, if possible, we recommend that you prepare a desktop computer (PC) with high internet connection speed and/or a fully charged laptop and/or cell phone and 3G, 4.5G connection. All responsibility in this regard will belong to the student.

At the end of the exam, you must end your exam by clicking on the "End the Exam / Submit" tab. If you do not click the "End the Exam / Submit" section, it will not be possible to evaluate your exams.
You have 1 (ONE) entry right for the exemption exam. You will not have such a right if you click the "End the Exam" tab or if your time is expired. You cannot return to the exam or make any changes after clicking the "End the Exam" tab.
During and after the exam process, no written and/or visual content related to the "Foreign Language (English I-II) Exemption Exam" can be copied, modified, distributed and used on any platform, including printed and social (digital) media, including recording, printing, photocopying, taking screenshots, etc. Exams of students who are found to have violated the rules will be invalidated. All responsibility in this regard belongs to the student.

Details about the time and day of Foreign Language (English) I-II Exemption Exams in the Academic Year of 2023-2024 are given in the table below. Please carefully note the exam date and hour regarding your department. Each student must take the exam in their own session. If students take the exam in different sessions, their exams will be invalidated.
