Master’s Programmes

1. Master’s Programmes in Private Law

A. Master’s Programme with Thesis in Private Law (Turkish)

About the Programme

Medeniyet Law School started a Master’s Programme with Thesis in Private Law in 2016-2017 academic year. This programme is designed to help postgraduate students to have a general theoretical knowledge about the branches of private law, to think deeply and critically, and to gain an ability to do research and write genuine scientific works. Lecturers who teach the modules within the scope of this programme are elite educators and experts their reach areas.

Modules that are thought within the scope of the programme are; Law of Obligations (Contract Law), Trademark Law, Company Law, Fashion Law, Employment and Social Security Law, Intellectual Property Law.

The language of the programme is Turkish. Moreover, interactive teaching methods are implemented within the programme and students are expected to prepare papers and presentations under the supervision of the lecturers.

The programme must be successfully completed within 3 years starting from the beginning of the programme. The students who are able to submit their thesis in this period of time and meet all other requirements will successfully graduate from the programme. Regular students generally consist of judges, public prosecutors, lawyers and academics who have undergraduate degrees in Law.

Admission Requirements

According to the İstanbul Medeniyet University Postgraduate Education and Examination Regulations, Suggested Acceptance terms are;

Candidates; must have an undergraduate degree in Law, scoring at least 55 standard points in the type of EA score from the Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam (ALES) or equivalent score accepted by the University Senate in GRE or GMAT exams, considering the level of undergraduate achievement. In addition, candidates must score at least 50 in YDS or YÖKDİL English proficiency tests.

Scores of the applicants will be evaluated by considering; % 50 of ALES their score, %20 of their graduation score and % 30 of their interview. Ranking will be done starting from the best score till the least score within whom has at least 55 points.

To apply to master’s programme with thesis; candidates should either have a degree from a law faculty from a university in Turkey or a university abroad that its equivalency accepted by YÖK (Higher Education Institute).

Graduation Requirements

To graduate a student must take a least 8 modules consisting of 24 credits and 90 AKTS, and successfully complete their thesis before the 3-year deadline. “Scientific Research Methods” module and thesis will only be rated as “successful” or “unsuccessful” for their scoring.

Employment Opportunities

Students and Graduates may apply to relevant academic positions at universities.

B. Non-Thesis Master’s Programme in Private Law (Turkish)

About the Programme

The Law School started a Non-thesis Master’s Programme in Private Law in 2017-2018 academic year. This programme is designed with the consideration of students who work for full time and wish to complete a master’s degree to advance in Private Law. Therefore, the classes will be held after 5pm.

The language of the programme is Turkish. The modules to be thought within the scope of this programme; Law of Obligations, Trademark Law, Corporate Law, Fashion Law, Labour and Social Security Law, Insurance Law and Intellectual Property Law.

Our lecturers are valuable academics who are experts in their fields. Throughout this programme, students will be required to prepare various assignments and presentations. Thus, interactive teaching methods are implemented within the programme. Students who have successfully completed their modules and assignments will be considered to have completed the programme.

This programme aims for students who have a degree in Law and wish to practice their legal profession in practical areas such as attorney-judge-prosecutor rather than academics.

Admission Requirements

To apply to the non-thesis master’s programme, candidates must hold a degree in law from a law faculty in Turkey or from a university abroad that its equivalency is recognized by YÖK.

Graduation Requirements

In order to graduate, students are required to take at least 5 modules in each semester and to complete the course load of 70 ECTS by taking a total of 10 modules and to be successful in the term project course corresponding to 20 ECTS. A total of 90 ECTS is required for graduation.

The non-thesis master’s programme aims to contribute to the personal, professional and academic development of students and does not provide employment opportunities alone.

C. Master’s Programme with Thesis in Private Law (English)

About the Programme

2. Master’s Programmes in Public Law

A. Public Law LLM Programme with Thesis (Turkish)

About the Programme

İstanbul Medeniyet Law School started the LLM Programme with Thesis in Public Law in 2020-2021 academic year. The aim of the programme is to offer an education that enables specialization in different fields, such as Administrative Law, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Human Rights Law, International Public Law, Tax Law, Philosophy and Sociology of Law, History of Law and Public Law in General.

While the programme gives a broad perspective on current Public Law issues, it aims to help students to solve legal problems with a scientific perspective.

This LLM programme is designed to help postgraduate students to have a general theoretical knowledge about the branches of public law, to think deeply and critically, and to gain an ability to do research and write genuine scientific works. Lecturers who teach the modules are elite educators and experts their reach areas.

The language of the programme is Turkish. Moreover, interactive teaching methods are implemented within the programme and students are expected to prepare papers and presentations under the supervision of the lecturers.

-          Prohibition of Using Force in International Law,

B. Public Law Non-Thesis Master Programme (Turkish)

About the Programme

The Law School started a Non-thesis LLM Programme in Public Law in 2020-2021 academic year. This programme is designed with the consideration of students who work for full time and wish to complete a LL.M degree to advance in Public Law. Therefore, the classes will be held after 5pm.

The language of the programme is Turkish. The modules to be thought within the scope of this LLM programme;

PhD Programmes

1. PhD in Private Law

About the Programme

Private Law is one of the fastest-going fields in the science of law. Developments has been experienced in general fields such as Civil Law, Commercial Law and Private International Law as well as in the fields that focus on more specific issues such as Banking and Insurance Law, Consumer Law, Competition Law and Intellectual Property in the last few decades. These developments occurring in both national and international law indicates that economic aspect of law will gain more importance in the upcoming years. Therefore, there is need for training lawyers to provide them with necessary theoretical knowledge about these branches of private law and the ability to do research and produce scientific woks. Furthermore, this programme will help these students to think deeply and critically about the issues in these areas, and resolve them with a point of view that is based on science and logic. To sum, this programme aims for practitioners and academics to be experts in their fields.

Terms of Acceptance

To apply to the PhD programme; candidates must have a Master’s degree from a university in Turkey or from abroad that its equivalency accepted by YÖK, recommended by the Graduate School, and approved by the Executive Board of the Institute of Graduate Studies. Furthermore, they must have at least 60 standard points in ALES or an equivalent score accepted by the University Senate such as GRE or GMAT. In addition, they must have at least 60 points in YDS or YÖKDİL English proficiency exams.

Candidates must have a Master’s Degree with Thesis in Private Law to be accepted to the Private Law PhD Programme. However, with the approval of the Institute’s Board of Directors and the relevant department, candidates who have a Master’s degree in different programmes can be accepted with the condition of attending compulsory scientific preparation modules for one academic year.

Graduation Requirements

PhD students are required to take at least 8 modules, amounting to 24 credits and 90 ECTS. The seminar course and the thesis are non-credit and only evaluated as successful or unsuccessful.

Starting from the beginning of the programme, each semester, students are required to register for the Thesis and the Lecture on Specialized Field thought by their supervisors. The Lecture on Specialized Field is non-credit and is conducted according to the principles determined by the University Senate.
