The second meeting of the Law School Seminars of 2023-24 Academic Year was held by PhD. Zeynep Ardıç with her presentation titled "Alternative Justice Mechanisms - Transitional Justice"on Tuesday, October 31, 2023 at 15.30 in the 3rd floor hall of Ziraat Bank Library.
PhD. Ardıç started her speech by elucidating the concept of transitional justice through the idea that justice mechanisms are not necessarily monotype, and explaining that this type of justice can be established through different hands, such as truth commissions, other than judicial bodies. She pointed out to the fact that the active participation of victims in the criminal justice system is an important factor that relieves the public conscience in ensuring justice. On the other hand, she stated that the victims' "right to the truth" is one of the fundamental values in transitional justice mechanisms.
In addition to pointing out judicial systems as effective institutions in ensuring the effective rule of law, she also touched upon the fundamental importance of truth commissions, which emphasize the subject role of the victim in the justice mechanism, in ensuring transitional justice.
The discussion has enriched in line with the participants' questions and examples from geographies such as South America, South Africa and the Middle East which were explained in terms of transitional justice.
