Our Law School hosted Prof. Miguel Taboada Calatayud of Department of Philosophy of Law, University of Castilla on 25.10.2023 at the Ziraat Bank Library Conference Hall. The conference was held open to Public, in English along with Turkish translation by Res. Asst. Sumeyye Koman.
In his speech titled "An overview of the EU: Who we are, Where we come from, Where we go", Prof. Calatayud explained the historical conditions under which the European Union was established and the structural features proposed at that stage. He stated that the European States, looking for opportunities for peace after the world wars, reached an agreement to connect their economies to each other, and that the union, which started with the idea of being an economic single market, turned into a structure that recognised shared values integrated over time. He mentioned that union owes it existence to the states’ tendency to partially renounce their sovereign rights. In this regard, he emphasized the important role of the union in protecting the shared values which are effective rule of law, respect to fundamental rights and freedoms, inclusive institutions and society, active human rights institutions, and a fair society.
The conference ended after the plaque presentation.
