The fourth meeting of of the Law School Seminars of 2023-24 Academic Year was held at the meeting hall on 7th floor of Block C at North Campus.
Assist. Prof. Miray Azaklı Köse started by explaining the domestic procedure for Türkiye to conclude treaties in international law in her presentation titled "Competence in the Termination of International Treaties." She explained the amendments in the procedure in conclusion of international treaties following the transition to the Presidential Government system in the light of Article 90 of the Constitution, Presidential Decree No. 9 dated 15 July 2018 and Law No. 244.
Assist. Prof. Azaklı Köse explained the different opinions of the doctrinal discussion on the roles of the legislature and the executive branches in withdrawing human rights treaties following Türkiye’s withdrawal from “Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence” where issues such as women's rights, violence against women, domestic violence, gender equality are discussed. She stated that in Türkiye’s current legal system, the executive branch plays a fundamental role in the conclusion and termination of treaties.
At the roundtable discussion, the question of How Türkiye’s obligations arising from international law are being reflected in current domestic law was also discussed with the contributions from participants studying in different fields of law.
The meeting ended after tea and bagels were served.
