The Moot Court on the issue of Statelessness, organized by the Istanbul Medeniyet University Debate and Legal Studies Club and aiming to contribute to the professional development of our Law students, was held on April 17, 2025 at the North Campus Youth Office.
As part of the event where our students addressed the Shamima Begum case, which has had a wide impact on the public, the discussions were not limited to legal texts but were also enriched with ethical values and fundemental rights and freedoms perspectives. In this way, it was aimed for the participants to look at events from a multi-faceted perspective and develop their critical thinking skills.
The main topic of the event was the case filed by Begum against UK, who went to Syria to join the terrorist organization ISIS in 2015 when she was only 15 years old. Her British citizenship was revoked on national security grounds in 2019 after she wanted to return UK.
Participants comprehensively assessed the implications of Begum’s statelessness in terms of international law and the impact of states’ security priorities on individual rights. The case was considered an important example that illustrates the delicate balance between human rights and public safety.
The debate, which focused in depth on issues such as the right to effective appeal, statelessness and the right to life, showed students how legal principles are tested through real events. The event, which contributed to understanding the practical equivalents of theoretical knowledge, was evaluated as an educational and awareness-raising experience.
