Refugees and Women's Rights were Discussed at Human Rights Summit

T he Human Rights Summit, organized by the Aydın Medeniyetliler Student Club, was held on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, in the Aşıkpaşa Conference Hall of the South Campus of our university, between 12.50 and 15.30.

Guests Apak Kerem Altintop, Lect. PhD. Zeynep Ardic and Att. Onur Tatar  discussed the refugee law and the fundamental rights and freedoms. 

After explaining the legal dimension of the concept of refugee in his speech titled "Refugees in Europe and Turkey", Mr. Altıntop touched upon the sociological reasons for the increasing number of refugees in the world. Ms. Ardıç, on the other hand, explained the constitutional basis of freedom of expression in her speech titled “Freedom of Expression in Turkey” and explained the rules that are essential in limiting this right in the light of ECtHR case law. Mr. Tatar, also explained the interpretation of the right to life in the light of jurisprudence of the court in his speech titled “The Right to Life and Femicide under the ECHR”. Evaluating femicides on the basis of the right to life, Tatar explained that issues such as gender inequality, gender discrimination, domestic violence, forced marriages play a role in femicides, and states have important positive obligations in terms of the right to life in the context of femicides.
