The Faculty of Law’s traditional Academic Year Opening Lecture, attended annually by all students, was held on Wednesday, September 25th, at Aşık Paşa Conference Hall on our university’s South Campus, with the participation of renowned professor, Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Hatemi.
After opening remarks by our university’s Rector, Prof. Dr. Gülfettin Çelik, and the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Prof. Dr. Özcan Günergök, Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Hatemi took the stage. In his lecture focused on the principles of natural law, he emphasized that while positive law currently dominates the global legal landscape, it is essential to remember the core principles of natural law: justice through equality, merit, fairness, and honesty.
Prof. Dr. Hatemi highlighted that social justice is the counterpart of justice through equality, which stems from human dignity. He explained that while justice through equality governs legal capacity, the principle of merit should guide the ability to exercise rights, underscoring that public duties must be entrusted to the deserving. He also pointed out that judges must ensure justice in concrete cases based on the principle of fairness, and concluded by stressing the importance of preventing the abuse of rights in accordance with the principle of honesty.
The lecture, which provided valuable insights for all legal professionals, ended with a plaque presentation to Prof. Dr. Hatemi.
